The City of Fargo, ND is excited to announce we are seeking a Solid Waste Utility Director in our Solid Waste Department to oversee, manage and direct the comprehensive planning and operation of the Solid Waste Utility by establishing goals and objectives within the policy directives set by the City Commission and overall goals and objectives to improve the quality of life for residents.
The Solid Waste Utility Director supervises approximately 51 full time equivalent staff, 5 part time staff, and manages the division's 18 million operating budget, including approximately $3.5 million transferred from solid waste operations to the general fund.
Develops and implements goals and objectives for the division to ensure compliance with City Commission policy directives and any applicable local, state or federal laws, rules and regulations. Plans, prioritizes, coordinates and evaluates the activities, programs and services of the Division and coordinates with other departments to ensure effective and efficient operation and quality service to the community. Using independent judgment provides supervision and leadership to Division personnel under the span of control. Manages the Division budget. Plans, prepares and administers service, equipment, supply, and other related contracts and/or proposals. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions. Assumes additional leadership role as outlined and approved by City Commission Emergency Declaration. Change in assigned duties to follow criteria as provided within National Incident Management and Command Systems. (i.e. oversee sandbag production facility for primary line of protection during flood events). Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range: $119,683.20 - $155,584.00. Excellent benefit package to include a defined benefit pension plan.

Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or a related field and seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in the administration of a comprehensive solid waste program including collection, recycling, regional landfill operation and resource recovery/reuse, renewable energy production and sales, renewable energy attribute production and sales (unique to Fargo); or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A valid driver’s license is also required.
