Oakland Parks & Recreation and Youth Development Department (OPRYD) seeks a dynamic, experienced, and progressive leader to serve as the next Director. OPRYD is a 110-year-old organization that operates a 2,500-acre park system of 140 parks representing 10% of the City's land area, 36 recreation facilities, and an array of youth enrichment and educational programming. The FY 2022-23 operating budget is approximately $53 million, including departmental funding (323 FTEs).
The next OPRYD will bring a combination of visionary leadership and organizational management as evidenced by the OPRYD’s record of accomplishment in comparable roles with a commitment to quality service delivery, performance excellence, individual and organizational accountability, a collaborative approach to managing a complex department with multiple partners and stakeholders that will add value to the City’s parks, recreation and youth development system while preserving and enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors in Oakland.
In addition to having the appropriate background and experience to lead an organization that values community engagement and embraces the City’s values of race, equity and social justice, integrity, and transparency, the Director will possess outstanding people and management skills, including building and maintaining an effective team and developing, mentoring, delegating, motivating, and holding people accountable.
The ideal candidate should possess sophistication in business/government finance and operations to maintain a fiscally responsible department, be committed to diversity, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be quick to understand how the City functions and the department’s role within the City.

Applicants must have five years of responsible management experience in parks and recreation administration, conservation, planning, or other community-focused services or a closely related field, including two years of supervisory experience. In addition, possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, social science, recreation, park management, urban planning, or a closely related field.
