SOLDOTNA IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY Soldotna is located in Southcentral Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, in an area referred to by locals as ‘Alaska’s Playground.’ The city sits along the banks of the world-renowned Kenai River, famous for its sport-fishing and outdoor recreational opportunities. Soldotna is also located on the wester...n edge of the vast Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area spanning nearly 2 million acres and home to bears, moose, caribou, sheep, and many fish and bird species. Soldotna is a home rule city, operating under a manager plan of government. The City Manager, appointed by a majority vote of the City Council, is the Chief Administrative Officer and administers the government of the city in accordance with direction and policies established by the City Council. The Soldotna City Council is the legislative body and is comprised of six members, all of whom are elected at large to designated seats. The office of Mayor is an elected position who serves as the ceremonial head of government, executing official City documents on authorization of the governing body. City of Soldotna services also include Economic Development and Planning, Public Works, City Clerk, Parks and Recreation, Airport, Library, Human Resources, Building Permits and Inspections, Streets and Maintenance, Police, Utilities, and Finance. Around 4,200 residents (1,800 households) live within Soldotna’s 7.4 square mile footprint, with approximately 15,000 additional residents living in nearby surrounding areas. Soldotna serves as a service, retail, educational and recreational hub for the broader region. Residents and visitors have access to top notch healthcare services, numerous shopping and dining amenities, and a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities in every direction, including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, berry picking, birding, wildlife viewing and more. The City of Soldotna boasts 11 parks - four with Kenai River access - and many maintained trails for walking, hiking, biking, running, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Summers in Soldotna are beautiful with long hours of midnight sun, and our winters are relatively mild and generally snowy. Soldotna has a strong sense of community and is alive with activity throughout the year. A diverse cross section of community organizations ensure that our residents can choose from athletic events, scholarly talks and round-table discussions, film screenings and movie nights, and year round arts and food markets. Many local establishments offer evening bands and entertainment, and there is always live music at our many community festivals.
