The City of Rochester, Minnesota (pop. 110,000+) is seeking a strategically-minded and collaborative leader to join the City's leadership team.Consistently recognized as one of the most livable cities in the United States, Rochester was ranked nationally as "Best Place to Live" by Livability.com in 2017. The third largest city in Minnesota, Rochester is home to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic and serves as host to 3 million visitors each year, many of them receiving care at the Mayo Clinic. As the Destination Medical Center public/private development plan is implemented over the next 20 years, the City projects that its population will top 160,000.
Nature of Work The Fire Chief provides leadership and strategic direction for the overall operation and administration of the Rochester Fire Department which includes fire prevention, suppression, investigation, emergency medical services, rescue, hazardous materials, emergency management, budget planning, and employee engagement. Responsibilities are performed with considerable independence under general policy direction from the City Administrator and City Council. The incumbent is an active participant in the City's Executive Leadership Team and maintains collaborative relationships with the staff of other City departments.
Duties and Responsibilities include the key areas of Strategic Direction, Operations, Team Leadership, and Public Relations which include, but are not limited to:
Lead the development and implementation of a strategic vision and plan for the Department that is in alignment and supportive of the City's strategic goals, enhances the community, motivates and inspires employees, and which addresses future service delivery needs.
Plan, organize and direct the work of the fire department in fire prevention, extinguishing of fires and in life-saving activities.
Foster a collaborative leadership style that encourages teamwork, promotes staff initiative, and provides professional growth opportunities for all departmental employees.
Promote positive relations for the City and Department through direct public interaction and media relations.
Work effectively with other City departments and local agencies to accomplish City and Departmental objectives, minimizing duplication of services.
Starting Salary is $120,306 to $146,086 depending on qualifications, with advancement to $171,866

Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or a closely related field. Five years of experience in a senior-level supervisory position in a fire department of at least 75 full-time, paid fire personnel that includes fire suppression, fire prevention/life safety, emergency medical service and training.
Licenses Valid driver's license
