The City of Berkeley is accepting applications for an exciting opportunity as a Senior Landscape Gardener! This is a lead level class in this series, providing direction and performing a variety of gardening and maintenance duties in landscaped areas. The position provides full range of duties such as landscape maintenance, event preparation, custodial duties, agronomics, irrigation, equipment maintenance, repair and operation, community relations and customer service.
The ideal candidate will have increasingly responsible public sector parks and/or landscape maintenance experience to independently and successfully:
Assists the Landscape Gardener Supervisor in planning, organizing, assigning and directing the work of Landscape Gardeners
Inspects job sites to ensure the proper maintenance of plants, shrubs, lawns, medians and other landscaped areas
Instructs and observes crew in the proper use of tools, equipment and appropriate safety precautions
Ensures safety of work sites by utilizing appropriate safety equipment and devices, including traffic control
Assists in the preparation of a variety of records and reports such as worksheets, accidents reports, maintenance requests
Trains and instructs staff in landscaping activities such as the techniques and methods of maintaining plants, shrubs, lawns and athletic surfaces
Personally performs landscape maintenance duties, such as mowing, edging, fertilization and irrigation of lawns and planted areas
Prepares soils and transplants seedlings, shrubs and trees
Operates a variety of hand and power tools related to the work
Operates a pickup truck and may tow a trailer
Performs routine maintenance and repair work on irrigation systems schedules
Cleans and maintains grounds, walkways, athletic surfaces, paved areas and park facilities and restrooms
Picks up litter, garbage and organic debris
Maintains tools and equipment in proper working order
Corrects or reports hazardous conditions
Responds to questions or complaints from the public
Assists the Landscape Gardener Supervisor in planning landscaping and irrigation systems
Assists in evaluating the work performance of assigned crew
Diagnoses and treats plant problems
Performs the duties of Landscape Gardener Supervisor on a relief basis
EDUCATION: Equivalent to graduation from high school
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of journey level experience in landscape maintenance work at a level equivalent to the Landscape Gardener class.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Techniques of lead direction, including planning, assigning and monitoring work and assisting in evaluation of assigned crew members
Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees
Soil preparation and enrichment
Methods and equipment used in weed and insect control and treating plant diseases
Maintenance and minor repair of irrigation systems
Use and minor maintenance of commonly used hand and power landscaping tools and equipment
Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work
Assigning and reviewing the work of others
Estimating material and labor needs for park maintenance project
Using landscaping tools and equipment safely and effectively
Recognizing common plant diseases and insect pests
Directing and instructing others in proper work methods and landscape maintenance techniques
Establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with those encountered in the course of the work
Exercising sound independent judgment within established guidelines
Preparing brief, accurate oral and written reports of work performed.
